Nicobar opens store in Chennai

Nicobar, a lifestyle design studio from the creators of Good Earth, unveiled its latest outlet in Chennai. Located along a broad avenue off Thousand Lights, Nicobar’s Chennai abode can be found perched atop Good Earth. A meandering space with six distinct sections, the newest home stays true to the vibe of the east coast—fresh, open, and starring enough timber and greens to supplant any tropical garden.

A flight of steps lead up to an open landing that's lush with greenery. A community table set out here encourages you to linger, and the mood is one of wanderlust. Set in an erstwhile haveli, a little passageway of all our travel essentials leads into the store's largest section, with colonial-inspired furniture, and a hotspot where people can gather for community events over drinks. Of course there is (as there always is) a swing, a brimming bookshelf, a letter-writing desk, and a series of glass bottles dispensing home fragrances.

The mosaics in the floor are mirrored in the fluttering fabrics in blush, moss and sky. In one section a Bauhaus-reminiscent nesting table houses serveware. A stopgap worktable with charging points, hotspots, and free wi-fi mean that you can stay on top of things even as you browse, while elsewhere you’ll find a little styling studio where you can have them put together a look for you with a mix of Nicobar styles and favourites from your own wardrobe. The lighting fixtures and odds and ends are woven in cane or crafted in brass, and are designed and produced locally. Moveable display systems are designed to meld into a floating space, allowing for endless permutations of the shop floor.
