By Retail4Growth Team | December 16, 2019

In a chat with Retail4Growth, Vipin Bakiwala, Principal Architect, VB Design Studio talks about the trends and how inclined are clients towards sustainability.

How would you define sustainability in the context of retail design?

Sustainable interior design is defined as a design which lay emphasis on improving indoor air quality, thermal comfort and quality of interior lighting; using recyclable materials and minimizing use of harmful materials as well as pollution. Retail spaces which experience continuous crowd movement, necessitates the use of such materials, lighting and elements that could support the crowd activities for a longer time, without much maintenance on regular basis.

What is the current trend globally and nationally as far as sustainable materials for architecture are concerned?

The trends of the past which brought about the long-living sustainable buildings have now begun to be reused by the architects and designers all around the globe with a vision to create buildings for future, & which could survive standing for years just like the old ones built in the past.

How inclined are clients as far as sustainability is concerned? Is there enough awareness?

Most of the Clients today are much inclined towards the sustainability facts and techniques nowadays. When it comes to building residences, we have witnessed an increased awareness with respect to materials, their source, application and techniques. For example, use of composite wood instead of wood, use of recycled furniture, the importance of plantation and green areas, elements favouring closeness to nature etc. Besides, sustainability suggestions by designers also play a great role in bringing awareness among the clients.
