Kalakarah – Breathing Life Into Walls

By Disha Baruah | June 18, 2018

Kalakarah is a confluence of professional graffiti and street artists, specialising in creating giant artworks on walls, awe-inspiring and mind-blowing murals on unusual surfaces and in unusual places, both outdoors and indoors. Here’s a team of passionate, young professionals who have an intimate understanding of the art form that’s unique and unmatched. From humble beginnings, Kalakarah has established itself as the leading collective of graffiti artists, working with world’s biggest brands including Vogue, Do., 8kpc and Bhive among others. Vishnu Ambat, Founder, Kalakarah Art Factory speaks to VM&RD on the art form and their unprecedented success.

What inspired you to start this business?

We are a team of young professionals with Software background. We were all employed in different software companies in Bangalore. The common thread binding us all was that we wanted to paint and create art. We decided to quit our jobs without any backup, which left us directionless. Chancing upon an interview of late Padma Shri Charles Correa, in which he spoke about the importance of wall painting in architecture, changed it all. That was the Kalakarah eureka moment! As of date, we have worked in Bangalore and Mumbai and have some interesting projects in the pipeline in other cities as well.

How do you generate new ideas for your artwork?

Whether it is street art or graffiti or mural, it must add value to the surrounding. It must beautify the place no matter what you are trying to express. After understanding the space and theme, we brainstorm about what needs to be portrayed. We also find inspiration in artworks from great wall artists around the world such as Hugo and Kobra Street Art.

How do you go about marketing your business?

As artists, our intention is to reach the maximum number of people. We use social media channels to showcase our work. We put up most of our art work on our Facebook and Instagram pages. Most of the artworks are commissioned projects or street arts and a lot of people are approaching us for painting walls.

What is your design philosophy?

Choosing the right design and colour combinations for the space is very important. When it comes to designing wall art, the size of subject plays a key role.

What are some of the key projects you have worked on?

We painted a corporate office wall in Koramangala. The CEO of the company personally joined us from Silicon Valley in the design process. We came up with an astronaut-moon themed wall and executed it. This was one of the best experiences.

Recently, we had the opportunity to paint Elvis Presley on a giant interior wall. Painting Kamakshi Devi and Chester Bennington was an experience of its own kind. Particularly, Chester painting where we had to paint on a high wall in the absence of basic tools such as ladder!

What are your future plans for the company?

We would love to explore the world and meet more graffiti artists from across the globe. Our main focus is promoting Indian art as a new style of graffiti, something which would be of interest to Indian and international art connoisseurs alike.
