Buddha Bites unveils first flagship restaurant in Kolkata

By Nabamita Chatterjee | Vjmedia Works | May 23, 2014

The décor, which resembles a Buddhist monastery, has been crafted by amateur artists of the city

Buddha Bites, the new fine dining eatery launched recently at 29/1 Panditia Road near Triangular Park in Kolkata will seemingly take you to a Buddhist monastery. Conceptualised by Saoli Mazumdar and her partner, the decor is done up in effervescent shades of red and cane-yellow and the restaurant has mellifluous Buddhist chants playing in the background. The 750 sq. ft. interior decor was completed within two months.

"While we were doing the background research for F&B, we found this location which suited our target audience who are up-scale Bengalis. It was our idea to launch a theme restaurant which will serve authentic Chinese food. In this area there is no such restaurant which is serving this type of specialised cuisine and we offer dishes from three culinary schools of China - Hunan, Cantonese and Szechuan. The interiors are the hardware of the restaurant and got artists from Government Art College Kolkata to do the entire work, said Mazumdar.

In terms of crafting the environment, the cane furniture, the props and intricate lighting arrangement play a vital role. Huge bells on the ceiling, the statue of Buddha, prayer wheels, dim focussed lighting, paintings on the wall -- all of them exude the feel of a monastery. The cosy setting amidst a Bengali residential locality off Gariahat is the USP of the place.
