Ikea to establish world’s first second-hand store in Sweden

The concept store is a pilot project that will be re-examined frequently. Damaged furniture and furnishings from nearby Ikea stores will be supplied to this store for refurbishment.

The Netherlands-based multinational furniture company, Ikea plans to open world’s first second-hand store in Sweden, by the end of this year. With the launch of this store, the company aspires to provide a top-notch second-hand shopping experience to its visitors.

Jonas Carlehed, Director, Ikea Sweden’s Sustainability, stated, “If we are going to reach our sustainability goals, we need to challenge ourselves and test our ideas in practice.”

The concept store is a pilot project that will be re-examined frequently. Damaged furniture and furnishings from nearby Ikea stores will be supplied to this store for refurbishment. It has already started revamping furniture that has been damaged during transit.

As a part of their eco-friendly drive, the store will facilitate renting and recycling of furniture all over the world, making it affordable and sustainable. It will allow customers to return old products that can be used by the company for resale and donation purpose.

With the store launch, the company aims to reduce its overall carbon footprint by the end of 2030. The upcoming eco-friendly approach will reduce overconsumption and waste, bringing new experience through old products.
