Starting with Bengaluru, the company becomes the latest competition to homegrown foodtech players Swiggy and Zomato.

Amazon has launched its online food-delivery service ‘Amazon Food’ as a pilot in select pin codes of Bengaluru. The service is live in parts of Bellandur, Haralur, Marathalli and Whitefield, according to the app. The move comes at a time when order volumes of the two largest players in the segment - Swiggy and Zomato - are at an all-time low due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to an Amazon spokesperson, "We are launching Amazon Food in select Bangalore pin codes allowing customers to order from handpicked local restaurants and cloud kitchens that pass our high hygiene certification bar. We are adhering to the highest standards of safety to ensure our customers remain safe while having a delightful experience”.

The company also plan to expedite its services in the coming months. Amazon has been luring eateries with competitive commissions, since mid-last year, as a part of its larger plan to build a comprehensive product portfolio - from grocery and food to electronics and home products.
