By opening its 4th store in Chennai, Decathlon aims to expand its customer base within the city, especially from areas like Alwarpet, Mylapore and T Nagar. This outlet is a multi-level large store format, which will spread over two floors and cover an area of 2626 sq m.
Mani added, “This outlet we will cater to existing customers as well as acquire a new customer base in the city.” When asked about business plans, he replied, “We will focus more on introducing sports to kids and for that we will join hands with schools and colleges to arrange field trips to Decathlon stores.”
The company already has stores at Padur, Perungudi and Poonamallee but they all are on the outskirts of Chennai city and attract people only in the nearby areas. These stores have a very limited traction from the city because of the distance. The move is a bid to carry the demands of its customers within the city, especially from areas like Alwarpet, Mylapore and T Nagar.
Decathlon has around 58 stores in India and operates in many countries across the world. It opened its first store in Chennai in 2015.
