This is the only industry in India which is moving backward even when the consumers are moving ahead, he cited.

He further pointed out some of the interesting fact and figures of grocery retail in India, amongst which he mentioned that top 5 categories that are leading the growth of international grocery retail, hold no importance in India and it’s a cause of concern. In a market like India, where people are resorting to internet and have the right to aspire, why would the small towns and rural parts (covering 90% of demographic) are still away from the boom, he wondered. Radhakrishnan wrapped up the session with strong suggestions to put distribution and supply chains in place in order to uncover the potential of grocery retail, which is moving away from being “involvement shopping” towards experiencing the “online” shoot in a few years to come.
