A new report by UK market research and data analytics firm YouGov reveals some of the changes in consumer behaviour and consumption choices as a result of the pandemic. It shows that a significant number of consumers are still stockpiling goods, with a majority 62% consumers in India stating they are more likely to buy items in bulk.

The report says that almost all consumers in India have developed a regular shopping routine over the course of the pandemic. Half the respondents contacted have bought groceries online using the delivery option, with only 13% choosing online click and collect methods. Within categories, purchase of cosmetics and personal care products has declined even as there has been an increase in consumption of home cleaning products.

Globally, the report shows that 60% of consumers said they intend to support local businesses and buy local and more sustainable products once the pandemic subsides. Consumers across most markets are much more likely to shop at supermarkets for groceries and household essentials than at corner shops or convenience stores. In India, a majority shopped from supermarkets compared to corner shops and convenience stores.

YouGov’s international report on consumer goods for 2021 along with BrandIndex states that consumers across 17 markets have altered their shopping habits over the course of the Coronavirus crisis.
