As one of the first speakers on day two at In-store Asia 2015 convention, Ulrich Spaan, Senior Vice President, EHI Retail Institute, Germany, spoke at length on "Retail Technology and Design Trends in Europe.” He started off the session by mentioning that retail in Europe is in the process of a dramatic change where e-commerce growth is still significant. Many markets are far away from being saturated and the "connected consumer” is requiring new approach in strategy. He shared with the delegates present at In-Store Asia 2015, that there's a heavy need for investments in store concepts and technology. "Omni channel and mobile are in the focus of the whole retail industry in the coming years. A rising awareness for sustainability and healthiness creates new challenges for the retail world - not only regarding their assortments,” said Ulrich Spaan.

He said that one in two online retailers in Germany own bricks-and-mortar shops. The different distribution used by the top retailers include Amazon marketplace, E-bay marketplace, catalogues, live shopping, mobile website or app including shop, shopping club, bricks and mortar shops and teleshopping. He felt that retailers need to act and the world is full of excellent examples.

Spaan took the audiences on a journey to some of the most exciting retail stores of today that included Hiebers Frische Center, Bad Krozingen, Germany, which he rated as the global benchmark for food retailing. He finds Hieber unusual with a very unique way of using colours and graphics in a food store. He also spoke about Kocchaus, Berlin - a concept store with'one lunch or dinner' concept wherein a person can choose a single product for smaller households. Spaan also shared many such examples of stores with innovative concepts to the Indian retail fraternity present at the event.
