Uniqlo to enter Indian market

By Satarupa Chakraborty | May 11, 2018

With its 2000 stores in 19 markets world over, Japanese fast fashion brand Uniqlo is poised to enter India in 2019 and will set up their debut store in the country in Delhi. It is noteworthy that the Indian retail market welcomed 4-5 noted Japanese brands in last two years.

Japanese apparel and accessories brand Uniqlo will soon be part of international fast fashion brands that anchored in India’s lucrative retail shore. Following the path of expansion mode of leading international brands like H&M, Kate Spade, Muji, Massimo Dutti and Disney brands, Uniqlo will open its first store in Delhi in the middle of next year, tentatively. Uniqlo has around 2,000 stores in 19 markets worldwide, including the US, the UK, France, Germany, China and Canada. The company also plans to launch in Sweden and the Netherlands this year.

Government of India’s decision to allow 100% FDI in single-brand retail earlier this year had cleared the path for international brands to set up retail stores in the country. Amongst other foreign retailers, mass furniture retailer Ikea will soon open their retail store in Hyderabad. Interestingly, a number of Japanese brands like Muji, Miniso, Kai and Onitsuka Tiger have entered Indian retail market in last couple of years. A senior veteran from the industry shared, “Japanese professionals have a trend of following their peers when it comes of business expansion.”
