Strategic space design in a hypermart store

By Mohit Manghani | Retail4Growth Team | Mumbai | March 22, 2021

Kwality Bazaar, Delhi, designed by Aatika Manzar, accentuates the incredibly important role design and aisle planning play in enhancing the shopping experience and thus maximising sales, in a supermarket environment.

Spread across 6000 sq. ft, Kwality Bazaar is situated on the main road of Vishal Enclave at Rajouri Garden and Tilak Nagar, Delhi. Designed by Delhi-based Aatika Manzar, the store’s layout redefines the experience of visiting a hypermarket and meets the needs of its diverse customer base no matter where they are in their customer journey.

“With Kwality Bazaar, the client wanted us to create a proper shopping experience where customers would not only shop, but also enjoy the vibe of the space. The planning was done keeping in mind the customer movement. Our priority was to place the cash counter at the entry so that once the customer pays, they can directly leave, to prevent unwanted congestion. There was a lot of digital integration keeping the modern online user in mind,” says Aatika Manzar, Founder & Director – Aatika Manzar Designs

Strategising shopper purchases

The floor layout and aisle planning has been done strategically to direct shoppers to high-priority products and drive impulse while maximising the sales opportunity for the store.

“We placed the dry fruits section and gift packaging area close to cash counters because customers love gifting customised baskets, especially during the festive season. The daily essentials and attractive items like beverages, chocolates, bakery and frozen items were also placed on the ground level. Since we wanted everyone to traverse the entire ground floor and see most of the racks before they move to the basement, we placed the lift and staircase at the back of the ground floor,” explains Aatika.

She further states, “In the basement, we made space for non-essential items like gluten free, organic, vegan, and other products which became the USP of the store. And to get more attention to these sections, we made the organic section in an organic bean shape and added a designed tree installation over it and finished it in green artificial creepers to give it a fresher and healthier vibe.”

Speaking about the design team’s role, Gaurav Sehgal, Owner, Kwality Bazaar, said, “ The project motivated by Aatika Manzar has largely been appreciated by the people, especially the fascinating interiors done on wood, which plays a key role in boosting the business prospects of spacious Kwality Bazaar.  The challenges faced by Kwality Bazaar during the ongoing construction, interiors etc. have extensively been handled by the team headed by Aatika Manzar & completed within the time frame (taken by surprise) in spite of the ban on construction, etc. by the Govt. of Delhi. The project head & its team deserve full appreciation for this.”
