In what looks an interesting development adding a new competitive twist in the Indian retail segment, the Adani Group is reportedly planning to diversify its airport business and expand its retail operations, from airports to highways and malls in a phased manner.

Reportedly the Adani Group is entering more than two dozen retailing categories on its own.The total store count is expected to increase from 50 in 2025 to 310 by next year, consisting of 270 retail stores and 40 F&B outlets.

“Our aim in the domestic side is to take over the entire airport business and run the entire retail operations ourselves over a period of time as the concession gets over for existing players,” Gaurav Singh, Chief Executive of Adani Airport and Ospree, the group’s airport retail venture is reported to have said.

According to media reports, this expansion will see Adani Group competing against the likes of Reliance Group and the Tatas, besides the likes of ITC, Dabur and Hindustan Unilever- dominant players in the F&B industry.

The moves comes in the context of the growing eco-system around aviation with reportedly 43 new airports to be added soon, and around 200 more in the pipeline for the next 20 years.
