The Hangar: A contemporary lifestyle space launches in Kolkata

The Hangar, a ground breaking contemporary lifestyle space, was recently launched in Kolkata. Located in the upscale neighbourhood of Alipore, The Hangar has been converted into a lifestyle destination from former port trust sheds. For the first time, six prominent Delhi-based fashion and product designers have come together in Kolkata through The Hangar store. The designers already had a strong presence in Kolkata, and felt that now was the time to establish a permanent address given the importance of the growing Kolkata market. It will house labels like Namrata Joshipura, Pankaj&Nidhi, Payal Pratap, Play Clan, Rajesh Pratap Singh and Tulsi by Neeru Kumar.
 
Amith Chabra, architect, of Livin' Colors Design has reconstituted the voluminous space into six open shops that are demarcated but designed to encourage a communal interaction. Ankush Seth of Mobile Techniks had been given the challenge of executing the interior elements of The Hangar - pieces were crafted in their Delhi workshop and shipped to Kolkata.
 
Organic and elemental materials such as fiber board, steel piping, concrete and jali have been used to create an industrial look that is softened by the beautiful range of apparel and products. Adding to the interesting juxtaposition of materials, a formidable wall of plant boxes greets clients as they enter the space.
