Decathlon opens store in Ramee Mall, Chennai

French sport goods retailer Decathlon S.A. has launched its new outlet at Ramee Shopping Mall - Chennai, which is the 4th store in the city. The store will cover 2626 sqm total area with 2437 sqm sale area by February 2018. According to Aditya Mani, Store Leader for the Ramee Mall Decathlon store, “In the first phase we have occupied total 1420 sqm area with limited product range. By February, 2018 we will be able to accommodate the entire product line and taking up the entire area.”  This Decathlon store is a multi-level big store format, which will spread over two floors to allow customers to view all the products in a single glance. Mani added, “We will occupy the first two floors for carrying 50 plus sports products including Cycling, Gym Pilates, Fitness Cardio, Cross Fit, Running, Mountain Sports, Football, Cricket, Badminton, Tennis, Golf, Skating and many others under one roof.”

Mani added, “This outlet we will cater to existing customers as well as acquire a new customer base in the city.” When asked about business plans, he replied, “We will focus more on introducing sports to kids and for that we will join hands with schools and colleges to arrange field trips to Decathlon stores.” 

The company already has stores at Padur, Perungudi and Poonamallee but they all are on the outskirts of Chennai city and attract people only in the nearby areas. These stores have a very limited traction from the city because of the distance. The move is a bid to carry the demands of its customers within the city, especially from areas like Alwarpet, Mylapore and T Nagar.

Decathlon has around 58 stores in India and operates in many countries across the world. It opened its first store in Chennai in 2015.
