Winners of VM&RD Retail Design Awards 2020 announced

Marking a first, the prestigious VM&RD Retail Design Awards ceremony, organized by Messe Dusseldorf India, went virtual this year, with over 500 participants logging in, keeping up the energy and tempo of a live on-ground event. Studio Lotus won the coveted title ‘Best Store Design of The Year’ for the project ‘Paro by Good Earth ’. The design firm also won the maximum number of Golds, 4 in all.

Quite rightly termed as the ‘Oscar of retail design in India’, the much-awaited VM&RD Retail Design Awards, organized by Messe Dusseldorf India, took off on an upbeat note in its virtual avatar this year and was held on May 29th, 2020.

Speaking on the grand occasion, Elke Moebius, Global Head of Retail / Retail Technology, Director EuroShop and EuroCIS welcomed all in attendance and said, “Even though we aren't physically together, it's wonderful to be here with you. I welcome you all & I am really pleased that despite all the adversities, due to covid-19, VM&RD awards are being presented for the first time ever on a digital platform. I would like to thank all of our sponsors, partners, exhibitors and visitors for their generosity and dedication to our mission. “

Thomas Schlitt, Managing Director, Messe Düsseldorf India then presented the tally of the 2020 VM&RD Retail design awards. The 12th edition of the popular awards had 325 entries across 22 award categories. Of these, 160 were shortlisted by the jury that comprised some prominent names in the global and Indian retail design space. The categories included 12 design categories, 10 special categories, and the ultimate title - the ‘Best Store Design of the year’, which is chosen from the first 12 design categories and awarded to the entry which wins the maximum number of Golds from the Jury members.

Studio Lotus bagged the ‘Best Store Design of the year’ title this year for the project ‘Paro by Good Earth’. Studio Lotus also won the maximum number of golds, 4 in all.  

Totally, 58 awards were given away this year, which included 15 Gold, 18 ‘Merit 1’, and 25 ‘Merit 2’.

As part of the process to raise the quality bar, the Award Committee this year also set tougher benchmarks for evaluation across categories. 

Sasikumar Ramaswami, President, Store Design & Projects for Landmark Group, India, part of the jury panel, said while speaking at the online awards ceremony, “The VM&RD team has redefined its approach with this unique online event & ensured they stood by their commitments. The number of entries has spiked this year, categories have widened and standards have gone up as compared to previous years. In terms of technology, innovation, and following an eco-friendly approach, every entry looked impressive, which means the participants really wanted to be on top this year.  This is a clear indication that the stature of VM&RD Retail Design Awards has gone really high. It has become the Oscar of retail design in India.”

Vishal Kapoor, Chief Design Officer -Future Group said, “This year the submissions were particularly exciting in F&B and technology space and it was tough to select and shortlist submissions even at the base level. It was also very encouraging to see a lot of companies pushing for sustainable designs, environment-friendly practices consciously now. For me everyone is a winner and I wish all the participants best for their present and future endeavors.”

Matthew Brown - Managing Director - Echochamber Ltd, another juror, while sharing his views said, “I think it’s never going to be more important to be creative than during these unprecedented times. The world of merchandising and window displays will become more important than ever. In a world of retail where we can’t touch products in the same way, it has never been so important to surprise and delight. Great standards have been set by the designers in this year’s Awards and I congratulate all the winners.”

The VM&RD Retail Design Awards, the most prestigious event for the retail design community in India, was presented by Argo Lighting Private Limited and is regularly held as part of the popular industry trade show In-Store Asia. In view of the COVID-19 pandemic that has negatively impacted businesses around the globe, the 13th In-Store Asia edition has been deferred to March 25 -27, 2021, but the awards function went virtual this year. The ceremony was ably hosted by Keisha Lobo, who kept up the energy alive with a lot of engaging interactions with the participants.

The online event was attended by business leaders, top retail design agencies, in-house design teams of top national brands, store designers, architects & retail solution providers.
