How Siciliana celebrates the charm of Southern Italy

By Chanda Kumar | July 27, 2026

Anjan Chatterjee, Chairman & Managing Director, Speciality Restaurants Limited, speaks to Retail4Growth about the nuances of ambience, design, and experiential details that come together to create an authentic Southern Italian experience for diners.

The idea of leisurely afternoon lunches, unhurried conversation, and the sweetness of doing nothing - the Italian way of life may be a cliché by now, but it's beautiful enough to tempt us all.

And doing just that is Siciliana, the newly launched restaurant for savouring Italian cuisine and hospitality at Phoenix Mall of Asia, Bengaluru. An ode to Southern Italy, this Italian concept from Speciality Restaurants Limited captures the heart of Sicily's sun-kissed coastal soul, offering a world of honest flavours, rustic generosity, and golden afternoons shared over wine and conversation.

The restaurant has been tastefully designed but with minimalism to reflect the unblemished charm and elegance of the countryside of Sicily and Southern Italy. Spanning over 2,067 sq. ft., the restaurant includes a well-stocked bar and a live pizza counter. Bringing the menu to life is Chef Saby (Chef Sabyasachi Gorai), the renowned Presidential Award-winning chef, whose food reflects the diverse cultures and traditions that have influenced southern Italian cuisine — Greek, Portuguese, Spanish, French, and Roman — creating a blend of flavours that is both bold and comforting.

After successful launches at Forum Mall, Kolkata; Lake Shore Mall, Thane, and Phoenix Palladium Mall, Mumbai, Siciliana now brings its warm Mediterranean spirit to Bengaluru. Anjan Chatterjee, Chairman & Managing Director, Speciality Restaurants Limited, speaks to Retail4Growth about the nuances of ambience, design, and experiential details that come together to create an authentic Southern Italian experience for diners.

How was the overall ambience and environment designed to bring authentic Italian dining, comfort, indulgence and hospitality?

Siciliana has been designed to transport guests to the warm and inviting coastal towns of Southern Italy. The ambience combines the charm of a traditional Sicilian trattoria with the refinement of contemporary Italian dining. The focus is on comfort, generosity, and hospitality, creating a space where guests can linger over long meals, share food with family and friends, and experience the relaxed rhythm of Mediterranean living. Every element has been curated to evoke a sense of indulgence without formality, making the restaurant equally suited for everyday dining and special occasions.

The interiors have been designed by renowned Mumbai-based architect Faizan Khatri and executed by a Mumbai-based team, associated with the Siciliana brand since its inception. The same team has been responsible for the execution of all existing outlets across India, ensuring continuity in the brand’s design language and overall experience.

What aspects of Sicilian culture, landscape, and lifestyle have been incorporated into the design language and interiors?

The design draws inspiration from Sicily's coastal landscapes, sun-drenched architecture, and vibrant food culture. Natural materials, earthy textures, warm colours, and handcrafted details reflect the island's rich heritage and connection to the Mediterranean. The interiors are influenced by Sicilian piazzas, seaside towns, and family-run eateries, where food sits at the heart of social life. Elements such as rustic finishes, artisanal accents, and Mediterranean-inspired motifs have been incorporated to create a sense of place while remaining contemporary and approachable.

What are some of the finer experiential details built into the concept to enhance the Southern Italy experience, such as menu design, serveware, décor elements, and guest touchpoints?

The Siciliana experience extends beyond the food. Menus are designed to tell the story of Sicily's culinary traditions while remaining accessible to modern diners. Serveware has been selected to complement the handcrafted nature of the cuisine, highlighting the beauty of fresh ingredients and artisanal preparation. Throughout the restaurant, guests will notice thoughtful décor details inspired by Southern Italian culture, from Mediterranean textures and materials to carefully curated artwork and styling. The service philosophy mirrors the warmth of Italian hospitality—personal, welcoming, and designed to make guests feel at home from the moment they arrive.

How does Siciliana differentiate itself from other Italian dining concepts in Bengaluru?

Siciliana differentiates itself through its focused celebration of Southern Italian and Sicilian cuisine, rather than presenting a broad, generic interpretation of Italian food. The concept places equal emphasis on authenticity, craftsmanship, and hospitality, with handmade pastas, artisanal pizzas, and regionally inspired recipes at its core. Beyond the menu, the restaurant delivers an immersive experience through its design, storytelling, and service philosophy. While many Italian restaurants focus on familiarity, Siciliana offers guests a deeper exploration of Sicily's culture, flavours, and way of life, bringing a distinctive Mediterranean dining experience to Bengaluru.
