JJ Bakers: Growing one bakery at a time

By Namisha Raj | Retail4Growth Team | October 02, 2017

From a single bakery in 1991, they have expanded to 11 bakeries in Lucknow, Gomtinagar being the most varied and most exciting in terms of look & feel and menu of the bakery.

Arvinder Singh Kohli started his bakery chain in Lucknow and opened the first bakery in Hazratganj in 1991. In the recent past, JJ Bakery has recently opened its outlet at Gomtinagar which is conceptualised by Arvinder’s son Jasjeev Singh Kohli. JJ Bakers have also won awards like brand leadership award in FMCG category by UP Govt. They were also nominated for most upcoming small and medium enterprise brands in India.

Focusing on the convenience factor, reaching out to wider areas and localities of Lucknow, JJ Bakery has expanded to North, South, East and West corridors of Lucknow. From a single bakery in 1991, they have expanded to 11 bakeries in the whole of Lucknow, Gomtinagar being the most varied and most exciting in terms of look & feel and menu of the bakery. JJ Bakers is also the first one to start their online bakery business in 2013 by the name of www.jjbakers.com.

Talking about the store design, Jasjeev says that he wanted a very minimalistic look, where the kitchen is the most aesthetically done up space. “With such a varied menu, the kitchen for a small bakery like this had to be designed keeping the space in mind. Hence the kitchen was done up in the designs of a cruise ship. Rajat Kant from Lucknow has done all the JJ bakery projects. The bakery has beautiful interiors that resemble street-side cafés of Europe. The façade of the café sports an old ambassador car brought from a junkyard in Lucknow along with tables that are made out of UshaSewing machines.

Success is dependent on hard work, and continuous improvement as said in Japanese “kaizen” is the key for all Bakers in India, adds Jasjeev Singh Kohli.
